What is the solution to "steam failed to initialize" error in gta5?

The most common cause for these errors is an incorrect installation of Social Club. If you are receiving one of these errors, uninstall the Social Club and then reinstall it manually. When installing the second time:
  • First, be sure GTAV is not running in the background. Open the Task Manager and end the following processes if they are running (right click the process and click "End Process"): GTA5.exe,PlayGTAV.exe,GTAVLauncher.exe
  • Ensure you have administrator rights on your computer. Run the Social Club Installation application as an administrator by right clicking the application and choosing "Run as Administrator."
If you are still experiencing the same problem, please try the additional troubleshooting below:
  • Verify the Steam Cache (Steam version only):
    1. Load Steam.
    2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
    3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
    4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
  • Run GTAV as an Administrator
    1. Go to the install directory for GTAV PC
    2. Right click "PlayGTAV.exe"
    3. Click "Run as Administrator"
  • Verify that you have the latest version of DirectX and Visual C++. The latest versions can be downloaded from here.
  • If you are stuck loading, auto-signin may have failed. Press the Home key and see if you can log in manually.
  • Temporarily disable antivirus/security, then uninstall if disabling does not work as a test. Be sure to reinstall and re-enable your antivirus after the test.
  • Make sure that Social Club is installed to the correct directory (by default, this is: Program Files\Rockstar Games\Social Club)

Fix: err_gfx_d3d_init in GTA V

The err_gfx_d3d_init is an error that GTA V players encounter immediately after the game crashes on PC. Although Rockstar addressed this issue with a number of patches since the game launched, the error is still preventing a lot of Grand Theft Auto fans from playing the game.
Note: In some cases, the error message is followed by a BSOD error.
While some users encounter the err_gfx_d3d_init error sometime after launching the game, others see the error as soon as they launch the game executable. Because of this, there isn’t a strong consensus about what exactly is causing the issue. Here’s a list of potential culprits that might trigger the err_gfx_d3d_init error:
  • Manual GPU overclocking is causing problems with the game engine.
  • Overlay software (mainly Fraps) is causing the game to crash.
  • The game is crashing because the system doesn’t have enough resources to run it with DX11.
  • Some graphics settings such as Tesselation and VSync is causing the crash.
  • PC doesn’t have the latest GPU drivers.
  • Some DLL files (x64.rpf, d3dcsx_46.dll, and d3dcompiler.dll) located in the game directory have become corrupted.
  • Dual GPU setup (Crossfire or SLI) is crashing the game engine.
  • Missing or corrupted Visual C++ Library.
If you’re currently struggling with the err_gfx_d3d_init error, there is some good news – most users have managed to troubleshoot and resolve the issue. Below you have a collection of fixes that have enabled users to fix the err_gfx_d3d_init error. Please follow each method in order until you manage to remove the error message.
Note: Keep in mind that all the fixes below assume that you have bought a legitimate copy of GTA V.

Method 1: Update your GPU drivers

Given the fact that this issue has received a lot of attention from both the Rockstar devs and GPU manufacturers, a lot of fixes have been released to tackle the issue over the years. Both Nvidia and ATI have released stability fixes to limit the reach of the err_gfx_d3d_init error.
The obvious place to begin your troubleshooting guide is to make sure your graphics drivers are updated. To do this visit this link (here) for Nvidia or this (here) for ATI. Download the latest driver version according to your GPU model and Windows version, then restart your PC and see if the issue is resolved. If it isn’t, follow Method 2.

Method 2: Reinstalling and updating the game to the latest version

Once you eliminate outdated GPU drivers from the list, let’s see if your game directory files are intact. If you bought a physical copy of the game, this can only be accomplished by reinstalling the game.
Note: If you bought the game through Steam, you right-click on GTA V in the Library section and select Properties. Then, go to Local files and click on Verify integrity of game files. The whole process might take over 10 minutes but will save you from reinstalling the game. If the scan reveals any inconsistencies, Steam will automatically re-download the missing/corrupted files.
Once you make sure your game directory does not have corrupted files, make sure GTA V is updated to the latest version. Depending on which platform you used to buy the game, the steps of updating will be different. Rockstar released a series of fixes for instances where the error is caused by an internal game problem.
If the error message still appears after reinstalling and updating the game to the latest version, followMethod 3.

Method 3: Disabling Fraps, ShadowPlay, or other overlay software

A lot of users have reportedly fixed the issue after disabling Fraps or other software that is overlaying information on the game screen. It seems like Fraps and a few other game overlayers are conflicting most GPU overclocking utilities in GTA V. If you’re using a software like this to track your FPS, disable it and try to run the game.
If the error is not appearing while Fraps (or other) is disabled, uninstall the program and look for a different solution to track your FPS count. If disabling Fraps / ShadowPlay hasn’t helped, move to Method 4.

Method 4: Reinstalling the Visual C++ Library and DirectX

Some users have managed to fix the issue after installing a missing Microsoft Visual C++ library and reinstalling DirectX. First, visit this Microsoft official link (here) and download & install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1.
Once you install the C++ library, go to this link (here) and install the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. This will equip your system with the necessary DLL files required to run the game in DX 11.
PRO TIP: If the issue is with your computer or a laptop/notebook you should try using the Reimage Plus Software which can scan the repositories and replace corrupt and missing files. This works in most cases, where the issue is originated due to a system corruption. You can download Reimage Plus by Clicking Here

Method 5: Deleting DLL files from the GTA V installation folder (Steam only)

The err_gfx_d3d_init error is often linked with two bugged DLL files from the Custom HLSL compiler. Some users have managed to resolve the issue by deleting d3dcsx_46.dll and d3dcompiler.dll from the game installation folder.
After you delete the DLL files, go to the _CommonRedist folder in the GTA V folder and Run the DX setup to reinstall the missing DLL components. When the installation is complete, reboot your system and launch the game again.
If you see a different error (related to missing DLL files), right-click on GTA V in Steam’s Library and click Properties. Then, go to the Local Files tab and click on Verify integrity of game files.
When the process is complete, launch the game again and see if it fixed the err_gfx_d3d_init error. If it’s still there, move to Method 6.

Method 6: Running the game in Borderless without Tesselation and VSync

There are several in-game settings that are known to trigger the err_gfx_d3d_init error. Some users have managed to stop the game from crashing with this error by disabling VSync, Tesselation and running the game in Borderless mode.
Note: The following fix is only applicable if the crashing error appears sometime after starting the game.
If you are able to start the game before it crashes, go to Settings > Graphics and set VSync to OFF. Then, scroll down and disable Tesselation and set the Screen Settings to Borderless (you can also force the screen to Borderless by pressing ALT + ENTER).
If the game crashes with the same  err_gfx_d3d_init error, move to the method below.

Method 7: Changing in-game Direct X setting to 10 or 10.1

Although GTA was marketed as a DirectX 11 game, it’s also designed to run on older DirectX versions. The err_gfx_d3d_init error is mainly caused by compatibility issues between the graphics hardware and the supporting DirectX software present on the system.
Most users have been able to remove the error by switching the in-game DirectX version to 10 or 10.1. While this will most likely solve your problem (especially on machines that barely meet the minimum requirements), it will make the game look less pretty than on DirectX 11. You switch to DirectX 10 by going to Settings > Graphics and set the DirectX Version to 10.1 or 10.
If you get the error at start-up and can’t access the in-game settings, follow the steps below:
  1. Go to your GTA V root directory. By default, it’s located in C:\Program files\Rockstar Games\Grand theft auto V.
  2. Create a new .txt file and name it “commandline.txt”.
  3. Add a -DX10 row to the file, then save it.
  4. Open the game and see if the error is removed.

Method 8: Disabling GPU Overclocking and CrossFire/SLI

If you have the habit of overclocking your hardware, you might want to disable the custom frequencies to see if they’re causing an issue. Some users have managed to stop the game from crashing with the err_gfx_d3d_init error by removing their overclock.
Of course, this is not ideal for an overclocking enthusiast, but at least you’ll have a clearer idea of what’s causing the issue. If the game no longer crashes once you revert to the default GPU frequencies, either lose them altogether or experiment with different values until you find a stable build.
If you have a dual GPU setup (CrossFire or SLI), try running the game with only one graphics card and see if the error is still appearing. If it doesn’t, reconfigure the SLI/CrossFire settings, reboot, then re-launch the game.
PRO TIP: If the issue is with your computer or a laptop/notebook you should try using the Reimage Plus Software which can scan the repositories and replace corrupt and missing files. This works in most cases, where the issue is originated due to a system corruption. You can download Reimage Plus by Clicking Here

Common GTA 5 PC Errors, and How to Fix Them

No Caption Provided
Update: Rockstar has released the first and second patches for GTA V, and they resolve a number of problems, including the Windows username and Windows Media Player issues outlined below.
Original Story: Grand Theft Auto V has, at long last, finally been released on PC, but some unfortunate gamers are encountering issues that are preventing them from being able to play. At least a few of those problems have workarounds, which we've outlined below.

How to Avoid Losing Your GTA Online Cars

If you've transferred your GTA Online progress from the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 versions, you may lose your saved cars if you haven't played since December 2013. Unfortunately, to prevent this from happening, Rockstar says you'll need to log in to your character on console before initiating a transfer on PC.
  • Enter GTA Online on your PS3 or Xbox 360. If you have not played in a long time, you will be prompted to accept a Title Update.
  • Pause the game
  • Scroll to the "Online" tab
  • Select the "Leave GTA Online" option
  • The game will not save on the latest Title Update, and your vehicles will now transfer properly to PC.
Once you leave GTA Online, an orange save icon will appear in the bottom right corner. Once that disappears, your progress will be saved, and you're free to initiate the transfer to PC. There's no indication that Rockstar will be able to offer a fix that doesn't involve first saving your progress on console.
If you already transferred your character and have lost vehicles, Rockstar suggests you submit a support request.

Windows Account Names

Your Windows account name could be to blame if the game hangs while downloading an update or is giving you errors like, "The Rockstar update service is unavailable (code 1)." This is because Windows account names that contain characters other than a number (0-9) or letter (uppercase or lowercase A-Z) will prevent GTA V from being able to install and run properly. This has resulted in the bizarre situation of Rockstar's support site hosting a list entitled, "Supported Characters At Launch for Windows Usernames for GTAV PC."
Rockstar is already working on a fix for this issue. In the meantime, you can deal with it by creating a new user account with administrator privileges and a name that consists only of the aforementioned characters. Unfortunately, simply renaming your account won't suffice if you already have an unsupported character in your name.
There's not yet any word on when the fix will be released, but Rockstar's support page will be updated with details when they are available, as well as with instructions on how to transfer your progress from a temporary Windows account to your permanent one.

Unable to Detect Windows Media Player

If you don't have Windows Media Player installed on your computer, you're likely running into an error during GTA V's installation that reads, "Unable to detect Windows Media Player on your system. Please install Windows Media Player, then retry the installation."
You can install it by following these instructions, courtesy of Rockstar:
  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Click "Programs"
  3. Click "Turn Windows Features On or Off"
  4. In the resulting popup, make sure "Windows Media Player" is checked under the "Media Features" folder
  5. Click "OK" and wait for Windows Media Player to install

Rockstar Social Club

Another problem brought to light by Rockstar's support siteinvolves Rockstar Social Club. There are multiple error codes produced by the same issue, including the following:
  • "Social Club failed to initialize."
  • "Social Club failed to load due to an incomplete installation. Please exit the game and re-install the latest version of the Social Club."
  • "A newer version of Social Club is required. The updater may have failed. Please exit the game and install the latest version of the Social Club."
If you're receiving any of these, your best bet is to manually reinstall Social Club from right here. It's recommended that you ensure GTA V is not running when you do so--check to make sure that GTA5.exe, PlayGTAV.exe, and GTAVLauncher.exe aren't running in the task manager--and that you have administrator privileges.
Should that not fix the problem, Rockstar outlines some additional steps you can follow:
  • Verify the Steam Cache (Steam version only):
    • Load Steam.
    • From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
    • Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
    • Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.
  • Run GTAV as an Administrator
    • Go to the install directory for GTAV PC
    • Right click "PlayGTAV.exe"
    • Click "Run as Administrator"
  • Verify that you have the latest version of DirectX and Visual C++. The latest versions can be downloaded from here.
  • If you are stuck loading, auto-signin may have failed. Press the Home key and see if you can log in manually.
  • Temporarily disable antivirus/security, then uninstall if disabling does not work as a test. Be sure to reinstall and re-enable your antivirus after the test.
  • Make sure that Social Club is installed to the correct directory (by default, this is: Program Files\Rockstar Games\Social Club)
